Climate Adaptation - Heat Stress Measures

Created at: 19 Feb 2021

Description

The municipality of Groningen has plans to make the Damsterplein greener and more climate adaptive. Currently, this square is often dealing with heat stress and floodings. Furthermore, the square has a round shape, incorporates very little natural green and is fully paved, all of which means that rainwater will be directed to surrounding streets. And to add to this, the square is not a hospitable environment due to the lack of seats and its grey charisma. By developing green islands, adding plants, public seats and water storage facilities, the new plans for the square are aiming to change all of the above.

The main goal of the plans are to create a place filled with green and water. This is made difficult by the presence of a parking garage underneath the square. This forces the new green and blue facilities to be well distributed among the square and to be placed mostly around the borders. By developing bioswales, wadi’s and façade gardens on the square, the effects of sunlight and heat will be limited. There’s also ongoing research into more innovative techniques, such as a buffer for storing excessive rainwater in the parking garage. The water in this buffer can later be reused for other purposes, such as for sanitary facilities or water plants.
