Buitendijkse Slib-sedimentatie Eems-Dollard

Storage for water

Nature-based Solutions (large scale)

Created at: 30 Jul 2020

Description

The Eems-Dollard is a large natural estuary where the river Eems flows from Germany into the Waddensea. Over the years, this area has started to struggle with large quantities of sludge, which can’t sink in that well anymore. This sludge is a mud-like substance which makes the water very cloudy, limits the water quality and has therefore enormous consequences for the natural habitat. Sludge limits the amount of sunlight in the water, limiting algae from growing, which has consequences for the whole food chain. Moreover, the sludge damages ecosystems and natural passages along the edges of the Eems-Dollard. This project aims to solve the sludge issue by experimenting with different methods for catching sludge on a large scale. If one of these methods is successful, it can then be applied to the whole estuary. This will hopefully improve the water quality, so that natural areas in and around the Eems-Dollard can be restored, which protects the towns and cities near the water against floods. This is a form of coastal management that attempts to support nature and enable it to deal with the consequences of climate change itself. It shows how minimal interferences can lead to big effects.
