Description

Filipino and Dutch students are teaming up to tackle a pressing environmental issue in Cebu City. The Metro Cebu River Scan Challenge, a two-week competition, brings together students from the University of San Carlos, Rotterdam University, and Hanze University of Applied Sciences to develop solutions for the heavily polluted Butuanon River.

The Butuanon River, a 23-kilometer waterway flowing from Cebu City's mountains to Mandaue City before emptying into the Mactan Channel, is in dire need of help. Its catchment area spans 62.5 square kilometers, with the 7.5-kilometer stretch running through Mandaue City being the most concerning. This urbanized area suffers from a mix of industrial, commercial, and residential development, leading to significant pollution.

The root of the problem lies in rapid urbanization and the formation of informal settlements along the riverbank. Many residents lack proper sanitation facilities, and untreated waste ends up in the river. Industrial waste further exacerbates the issue. The once-pristine river has become murky, smelly, and essentially a flowing garbage dump.

However, hope remains. The challenge highlights the potential for restoration. With proper care and innovative solutions, the Butuanon River can be revitalized, returning to its former state of clean and pristine waters.
