Description

The Butuanon River, a once flourishing ecosystem, now proves how destructive human negligence towards nature is. Stretching 23 km from Cebu City to Mandaue City, this once-thriving river served as a backbone for the locals; from the food source to livelihood, even as the playground for the young. However, today it is in a dire situation, of the pollution brought by poor waste disposal practices, severely deficient drainage systems, and many others.

The once dependable source of daily means to survive became a threat to the local community. The challenges Butuanon River poses nowadays are multi-faceted yet equally inimical to the community. Debris frequently clogs the waterway, erosion of the river banks, the unbearable stench of the murky water, the list could go on. Not to mention, the biohazard of the contaminated water that continues to threaten the nearby communities' well-being. This concerning circumstance fueled our River Scan Challenge, where the University of San Carlos, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, and Rotterdam University students will develop solutions to save the Butuanon River from the brink of collapse.

The restoration of the Butuanon River is not just about rescuing a river; it is also about ensuring the legacy we pass on to coming generations. By coming and facing the underlying causes of the river's deterioration together, we can build a path toward a better, brighter tomorrow.
