Description
The Manjuyod sandbar is a popular tourist destination off the coast of Bais City in Negros Oriental in the Philippines. Due to the white sands and clear blue waters, the sandbar is also called 'the Maldives of the Philippines'.
Six structures on stilts are located on the sandbar, which are in various stages of construction and decay. The buildings were constructed for tourism purposes and are fully in the water during high tide. Houses on stilts are a way to adapt to the natural tidal fluctuations and potential flooding. However, these structures show the challenges of building in the sea, evident by the extensive damage that some of the structures show.
As sea levels rise due to climate change, coastal and island communities are increasingly adopting stilt construction to adapt to these changes.
