Urban Trees Project

Description

The proposed Urban Trees Project in Port Vila, Vanuatu is a project involving “the strategic introduction of multi-value trees and vegetation to key urban areas and coastal environments in Port Vila” (Zari & Martinez-Almoyna, 2017, p. 13). The project is recognised as being easy to implement, cheap, and one which can quickly yield tangible results. Zari and Martinez-Almoyna ensure that it’s designed to catalyse public interest in and progress of other Pacific Ecosystem-based Adaptation to Climate Change (PEBACC) NbS projects.

The selection of native plant species is carefully built to become a “living library or repository” which would become effective as an educative tool, food source, ecosystem service, and begin a seedbank, particularly for species at risk due to climate change. The project also specifies rain gardens, swales, and mini wetlands, creating a further positive environmental impact. The transition from an urban street tree project to the beginnings of an urban ngahere, or sponge city, is an important step which can be taken much more easily once the public is onboard and enthused. Particularly in denser urban environments it's even more important to take this step to enable better environmental performance and regeneration compared to what usual urban street tree implementations can offer.
