The B:HIVE

Building with Nature

Created at: 30 Aug 2022

Description

With a vision to create smarter, sustainable and healthier places of work, Smales Farm have created the B:HIVE, offering shared workspaces for both individuals and businesses. The B:HIVE included huge inbuilt planter beds on each floor to create a jungle atmosphere for people to relax in, socialise and soak in the greenery. They sourced lush tropical greenery and generously filled each bed, along with oversized pots and plants to create an indoor garden retreat. When we discuss biophilic design we understand that its the art of blurring the lines between outdoors and indoors. Looking at what BVN and Jasmax accomplished here, we can see with careful design, The B:HIVE does exactly that; it blurs the lines. Through its massive atrium that creates not only a lot of light but also serves as an almost natural air flow controller. Also taking into account the greenery that falls within each space in the building, how every area starts to develop that connection with the outside world by filling our vision with relaxing greenery, once you are in the building you simply cannot be in a space without having some connection to the outdoors and this is an extremely powerful biophilic design, something we could all use when we are slaves to the indoors. The B:HIVE has shown us a really strong nature based solution to our current workplace environments. With a connection to the environment not only does this building act as a carbon sponge but it also relieves stress, anxiety and tension, it also creates motivation, happiness and a sense of energy. All these things are crucial in a workplace but also in our daily lives, the modern world is extremely disconnected with the environment with all the modern technology giving us the perfect excuse to be inside. BVN and Jasmax have tackled this problem extremely well and will remain as a perfect example of how we as growing architects can approach the desperate calls from papatuanuku and ranginui.
