Description

Climate-conscious Lebuinuspleinen

The climate is changing worldwide and that is no different in Deventer. The design and refurbishment of the Lebuinuspleinen take climate change into account. This is necessary and is also possible within the historical context of the place.

The climate adaptation in the heart of the historic city manifests itself in various ways:

- Material use;
- Disconnection and infiltration of rainwater;
- Trees and greenery;
- Height profile new layout.

Material use

CO2 emissions are a major cause of climate change. The largest and most sustainable CO2 saving is the CO2 that is not produced. The current pavement of the Grote Kerkhof largely consists of baked thick-format clinkers (clay baked at a high temperature). Reuse of this material prevents new emissions. The new square around the Lebuinuskerk will have so-called semi-hardening. This pavement is more permeable to water and, together with the lighter color, has a positive effect on possible heat stress.

Rainwater disconnection

Existing streets will be broken up with the redevelopment of the Lebuinuspleinen. In the redesigned public space, the rainwater is disconnected from the wastewater system. The rainwater ends up in a new, separate infiltration system. That is also the time when downspouts of houses and buildings can be connected to the new infiltration system. This system buffers rainwater from roofs and public spaces and infiltrates it into the subsurface, which is very suitable for this purpose. This disconnection process coincides with the redevelopment plan for the squares, in which a large part of the Lebuinus Church will also be disconnected. An important advantage is that this creates more space and buffer capacity in the existing waste water system. The entire city center will benefit from this refurbishment.

Trees and greenery

An increased amount of greenery in the city center will provide more shade in the future, as well as a better spread of shade over the Grote Kerkhof. This ensures less heat stress. Unfortunately, not all trees in the Grote Kerkhof are in good condition. For both technical and spatial reasons, it was decided to replace 7 trees with 9 new ones. The new trees are a lot larger than normal when planted. In addition, 7 multi-trunk trees will be planted opposite the town hall. On the Stromarkt, two plane trees at the entrance to the library are being dug up for technical reasons and replaced by flowering multi-trunked trees. The plane tree near the Proosdij gets more space and can grow more freely.

Elevation profile new facility

Climate change results in heavy rainfall. There is no more rain than before; the showers are only much heavier. So intense that sewers have insufficient capacity to drain all the water. At such a moment, the public space can serve as a buffer. The water is then temporarily on the street.

For example, the Straw Market (and also the New Market in the future) will be provided with a so-called 'hollow' profile. This means that more water can be temporarily collected in the public space. The pavement of the Grote Kerkhof is sloped (a slope) away from the facades. Rainwater is collected in a gutter near the freestone belt, which is further away from the buildings. But the natural slope (slope) towards the IJssel is also not disturbed. It fulfills the function of a 'calamity buffer', so that individual buildings remain protected from flooding during heavy rainfall.

Samenvatting (Dutch description)

Klimaatbewuste Lebuinuspleinen

  • Materiaalgebruik;
  • Afkoppeling en infiltratie van hemelwater;
  • Bomen en groen;
  • Hoogteprofiel nieuwe inrichting.

Materiaalgebruik
