Constructed Wetlands: Groundwater Treatment Plants (GWT)

Created at: 25 Aug 2016

Description

Reconstruction of former Horizontal Flow Reed bed by a two stage Vertical Flow System (http://www.akut-umwelt.de/bin/gwt/spda), type Phragmifiltre®.
It´s advantage compared to typical Portuguese anaerobe wetland filters is it´s robustness at high dynamic organic and hydraulic loads. The aerobe operation avoids smell and methan emissions. The original HF system tended to accidential surface flow with bad treatment performance. The special task of this treatment site was the reconstruction of wetland cells under operation and upgrading treatment performance and capacity. By choosing Phragmifiltre® the Imhoff tank and external sludge drying beds could be eliminated.
Sludge is treated simultaneously on surface of stage one. A KUHN KKA headworks unit of primary screening and grit trap functions as additional safety measure. The system which is designed for 900 p.e. already serves an organic load of about 1,200 p.e.
Year of construction: 2009

Aguas do Mondego (http://www.aguasdomondego.pt/content/index.php?action=detailfo&rec=1962&t=Sao-Pedro-de-Alva)
